REMEMBERING JUAN
Juan Carlos Zuniga was a precious baby boy whose life ended when he was only two months old. At such a young age, Juan was just beginning his life. He should have had years ahead of him to discover the world, learn to smile and laugh, take his first steps, and experience the love and comfort every child deserves. He was completely dependent on the adults around him for his safety, care, and protection. Instead, Juan suffered a serious head injury that ended his life before he could experience even the earliest milestones of childhood. His death led to a police investigation and the arrest of his seventeen year old mother. Although few personal details about Juan have been preserved in public reporting, his life was no less meaningful because it was brief. He was a little boy who deserved the opportunity to grow up safe and loved.
JUAN'S STORY
In January 1990, Juan Carlos Zuniga was living with his teenage mother and her boyfriend in an apartment in Van Nuys, California. On the evening of January 22, 1990, his mother asked a neighbor to take her and Juan to the hospital. She later told investigators that she had been bathing her son when she noticed that his head felt unusually soft and that something appeared wrong with him. The neighbor transported them to Valley Presbyterian Hospital at approximately 8:00 p.m. juan was still conscious when he arrived at the hospital. However, his condition deteriorated as medical personnel attempted to treat him. He had suffered a serious head injury. Despite efforts to save his life, Juan died at approximately 8:30 a.m. on January 23, 1990. Following his death, detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department's child protection section began investigating the circumstances surrounding his injuries. Investigators interviewed witnesses and subsequently arrested Juan's seventeen year old mother on suspicion of murder. She was detained at Sylmar Juvenile Hall. Police did not publicly identify the mother because she was a minor. Investigators also reported that her boyfriend had not been home on the evening Juan was taken to the hospital and was not considered a suspect. The available contemporary reporting does not explain precisely how Juan sustained his fatal head injury. What is known is that his life ended when he was only two months old, and authorities considered the circumstances suspicious enough to arrest his mother. Juan never had the opportunity to grow beyond infancy.
JUSTICE FOR JUAN
Following Juan's death, the Los Angeles Police Department investigated the circumstances surrounding his fatal head injury.
Mother of Juan Carlos Zuniga
Relationship to Juan: Mother
On January 23, 1990, investigators arrested Juan's seventeen year old mother after interviewing witnesses concerning her son's death.
She was detained at Sylmar Juvenile Hall on suspicion of murder. Because the mother was a juvenile, contemporary reporting did not disclose her identity.
The available records do not establish whether prosecutors subsequently filed a murder charge, whether the case proceeded through juvenile court, or whether she was ultimately convicted. An arrest on suspicion of murder does not establish criminal guilt.,Without additional court records, it would be inaccurate to state that Juan's mother was convicted or sentenced for his death. The investigation nevertheless reflected serious concerns about the circumstances surrounding the head injury that ended Juan's life. The final outcome of the criminal investigation remains unverified.
FOREVER REMEMBERED
Juan Carlos Zuniga should have had an entire childhood ahead of him. He should have learned to crawl, taken his first steps, spoken his first words, and celebrated birthdays surrounded by people who cared about him. He should have experienced school, friendships, family memories, and the countless moments that make growing up so special. Instead, his life ended before he was even three months old. Although the public record contains little information about Juan's personality or the family memories left behind, his life deserves to be acknowledged with dignity. He was not simply an infant mentioned in an old newspaper report. He was a little boy whose future mattered. More than three decades have passed since Juan's death, but the passage of time does not make his life any less important. His name deserves to be preserved, his story remembered, and his short life honored. Abuse Angels remembers Juan Carlos Zuniga. Remembered. Honored. Never Forgotten.
